Loading a Nuclear Weapon, Wendover Historic Airbase The atomic weapons development program was in Nevada, but the bomber team, led by Col. Paul Tibbets, trained on the Enola Gay at Wendover Historic Airbase. Wendover Historic Airbase Built in 1854, the grist mill served Tooele Valley pioneers until it fell into disrepair. Today, it is located in the Stansbury Park neighborhood. In the 1980s, a group of dedicated locals began restoring the gristmill and developing a historic park. Pony Express Reride 2018 The Historic Pony Express Trail runs through the southern part of Tooele County. Every year, riders travel the original route of the Pony Express from Missouri to California carrying mail in traditional mochilas.
